Fifteen great Indonesian Masters: Agus Suwage, F.X. Harsono, Yuli Praytno, Melati Suryodarmo, Mella Jaarsma, Heri Dono, Made Wianta, Eko Nugroho, Entang Wiharso, Ugo Untoro, Titarubi, Astari Rasyid, Arya Pandjalu, S. Teddy Darmawan, and Budi Kustarto will be featured in the exhibition “Beyond the East: A Gaze on Indonesian Contemporary Art”, curated by Dominique Lora, from November 15 2011 until January 15 2012 at MACRO Testaccio, Rome, Italy.
The exhibition features a new generation of artists in search of a both cultural and human shortcircuit, driven by the need to fabricate a novel glocal identity. Today America, Europe, and Asia are bound by new media technologies and respond to the rules established by theinternational market. Nevertheless they all share the necessity to preserve the uniqueness and the diversity of their historical patrimony. The works of those artists re-elaborate, analyze and dissect the dynamics inherent to mass consumerism intended as a fetish idolatry of the brand.
During the last decade Indonesian Art has become a driving force able to penetrate the international art scene. If the imperialistic powers have initially provoked a loss of authenticity and an interruption of cultural referents, it has slowly evolved into a hybrid process where the linguistic boundaries of local cultural heritage have been significantly extended. In such a way, the perpetual opposition between forces such as tradition and modernity, religion and state, local and global has favored a rapid economic growth together with a structural transformation of the Indonesian society.
Such oppositions constitute the ground and the subject of the exhibition “Beyond the East: A Gaze on Indonesian Contemporary Art”, which is the site where to experiment the ideas of “other” and “elsewhere”. The show is a playful, critical and interactive space where the Italian and European public will be enabled to better comprehend the logics and the codes that are transforming the face of Asia and therefore the rest of the world.
